Kamiak Butte is a favorite summer getaway of mine on the Palouse, just 15 minutes from Moscow, ID.
It’s a rocky island overlooking the wheat fields of the Palouse and features a 3.5 mile trail called Pine Ridge Loop. The southeast slope is a sage desert ecosystem; the north slope is a lush forest. Perfect for a quiet afternoon of gentle, meditative hiking. Lots of smells and textures.
Today’s treasure: a trio of Calypso orchids. I’ve heard people rave about these teeny tiny flowers, but have never seen myself — until today. Their name comes from the Greek word associated with concealment. The flower also known as the fairy slipper or Venus’s slipper.
